Checkmate is a checkpoint robot that appears in Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair. Created by Dr. Puzz, passing by these robots will allow them to save Yooka and Laylee's progress. If the player dies, they will appear to the last Checkmate that they passed through and will have the same amount of quills of when they passed through originally.

There are two Play Tonics that will affect the Checkmates in the game. A tonic called "More Checkmates" will increase the number of Checkmates in a level by 1 or 2, and this will decrease the player's quill bonus by 0.2. Another tonic called "Less Checkmates" removes all but one Checkmate in the middle of the chapter and the very first Checkmate in the beginning of the chapter. While this tonic makes the level significantly more difficult, this risk will increase the player's quill multiplier by 1.

If the player dies a total of five times, the Checkmate that is being used will transform into Golden Checkmate, allowing the player to skip ahead to the next Checkmate if they choose to do so.

Name Origin

Checkmate is a combination of "checkpoint," a place in a video game at which a player may restart if their character is killed or they lose the game, "mate," a term for friend, and "checkmate," a chess term for when the king is unable to make any moves without being captured.

Appearance

Checkmate is a red antique camera with two silver sides. He has two eyes where the flash would be, and a black lens with a silver stripe going around and a green button that flashes blue above it. When Yooka approaches him, he emits a green beam of light that creates an outline of the position the duo were in upon entering the light.

Tips

• If the player has the "Less Checkmates" tonic on, the player can purposely die five times in the beginning and activate Golden Checkmate, allowing them to quickly skip to the middle of the level. If the player repeats this, the current Golden Checkmate will teleport the player straight to the end of the level right next to the Beettalion that needs to be rescued.
• Taking advantage of Golden Checkmate may cause the player to possibly miss out on collecting quills and T.W.I.T Coins.
