Rare, Ltd. (formerly known as Rareware) is a video game company that created the Banjo-Kazooie Series, alongside with many other famous video game titles, such as Conker's Bad Fur Day, Donkey Kong 64, and Perfect Dark. Many of the members of Playtonic Games came from Rare. On September 24, 2002, Rare was bought by Microsoft to produce games for the Xbox console line.

Rare was founded under the name Ultimate: Play the Game in 1982 as a software company by Tim and Chris Stamper.

Banjo-Kazooie[]

The Banjo-Kazooie Series is a set of video games, developed by the UK-based company Rareware in Twycross, England, UK. The first game, Banjo-Kazooie, debuted in 1998 for the Nintendo 64. A sequel was made in 2000 for the same system titled Banjo-Tooie[1].

The Yooka-Laylee series is a spiritual successor of Banjo-Kazooie and many of the developers from Playtonic Games were originally from Rare, Ltd. The developers over time either quit or were laid off at some point.

On June 11th, 2019, Banjo and Kazooie were announced as playable characters for the Fighter Pass DLC of Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the first appearance the duo has made in a on a Nintendo console since game since Banjo-Pilot in 2005, and the first physical appearance in a game since Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing in 2010.

No more main title games have been announced to be in the making as of July 2024.
