Yooka-Replaylee is a comprehensive remake of the 2017 3D platformer Yooka-Laylee, developed by Playtonic Games. Described by the developers as a “remastered, remade, and remixed” definitive edition, it brings substantial improvements in visuals, gameplay, and content while preserving the original’s whimsical charm.
Story[]
In Yooka-Replaylee, the adventurous duo Yooka and Laylee return in a reimagined journey that remixes the original tale with sharper pacing and expanded lore. The story begins in Shipwreck Creek, where Laylee discovers a mysterious book with golden pages—later revealed to be the legendary One Book, capable of rewriting reality itself.
When the villainous Capital B, CEO of the shady conglomerate Hivory Towers, learns of the book’s power, he deploys the Novelizer 64, a machine designed to vacuum up every book in the world. Laylee’s prized book is among the first to be stolen, but its magical Pagies scatter before it can be fully absorbed.
Determined to reclaim the book (and maybe sell it for a tidy profit), Laylee convinces Yooka to join her on a quest through the labyrinthine halls of Hivory Towers and its connected worlds. Along the way, they team up with quirky allies like Trowzer the snake and Dr. Puzz, a rogue scientist who helps them transform into new forms to overcome challenges.
The remastered narrative streamlines the original’s exposition, fleshes out character backstories, and introduces new dialogue that better reflects the duo’s personalities. While the core conflict remains—stop Capital B and recover the Pagies—the journey now feels more cohesive, humorous, and emotionally resonant.

Rextro Bytes Back[]
In Yooka-Replaylee, Rextro returns with a fresh coat of paint and an overhauled arcade lineup. While the retro-loving dinosaur still guards his signature consoles in each world, the minigames themselves have seen a complete redesign. Gone are the clunky controls and sluggish pacing that plagued the original's minigames - Rextro Bytes Back delivers a complete overhaul with gorgeous new visuals, streamlined gameplay, and a revitalized sense of charm and replayability.
Development[]
Yooka-Replaylee was developed as a definitive reimagining of the original Yooka-Laylee, shaped by nearly a decade of community feedback. Rather than a simple remaster, the game was rebuilt from the ground up to address long-standing criticisms—particularly around camera control, movement, pacing, and UI. The development team aimed to modernize the experience while preserving the charm of the original, resulting in a version that feels both familiar and fresh. Visuals were upgraded to 4K with enhanced lighting and animation, and all worlds are now fully expanded by default, allowing for richer level design and new secrets. The control scheme was overhauled to support smoother chaining of moves, and the camera system was rebuilt for better responsiveness.
New systems were introduced to deepen gameplay and progression. Q.U.I.D.S., a new collectible currency, rewards platforming skill and can be spent on tonics and modifiers. Quills were reworked to be color-coded by world and are now used to unlock cosmetics and upgrades. Tonics themselves were expanded to include gameplay tweaks, visual effects, and new abilities, offering players more customization. Accessibility features, a map system, and UI improvements were added in direct response to player feedback. The game was showcased at Steam Next Fest and Summer Game Fest 2025, with a full release planned for later that year. Despite some early demo performance issues, the remake has been widely praised for its ambition and polish.
